Genre is a type, kind or category of literature (book).  Genre can be broken into different categories Fiction, Folklore, Poetry and, Non-fiction.  These categories are broken down further into sub-genres

Sub-genres are all of the same type of stories under one title. For instance under the title Folklore are several different types or kinds of sub-genres.  Fables, Tall Tales, Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales are all types of Folklore.

                            Fiction
Stories that are made up, make believe or not true are fiction.

Historical Fiction

are stories that are set in the past and are based on real people and/or events.

Realistic Fiction

are stories that could really happen but are not true.

Science Fiction

are stories that are made up of stories that blend fact and fiction with futuristic technology.

Folklore

Fictional stories that were once passed down orally or by word of mouth.

Fables

Fables are short stories that use talking animals to teach a lesson.

Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales may involve fairies,princes, princesses, giants, dragons, elves, goblins, dwarves, and other fancifiul and fantastic forces.  The usually began with "Once Upon a time..." and end with "Happily ever after..."

Tall Tale

Tall Tales are stories that exaggerate the truth, with heroes that are larger and stronger than ordinary.

Myths

Myths are stories that explain why the world is the way it is.  Myths usually have gods and goddesses

Poem/Poetry

is verse written to inspire thoughts and feelings in the reader.  They often use rhyme an rhythm, or can be written in free verse.

Non-fiction

Stories that are true or actually happened are non-fiction.
